Degrees and Certifications:

Rick Flieger

I was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1972 and grew up in Tucson, Arizona where I attended Salpointe Catholic High School, graduating in 1990. That year, I moved to San Antonio to attend Trinity University, where I graduated with a degree in English in 1995. On the advice of one of my Trinity professors, I moved to England and earned a Master of Arts degree in Modern Literature from the University of East Anglia in 1997. This led me to pursue Trinity's M.A.T. degree, which I earned in 1998. After completing my student teaching internship at ISA that year, I accepted a teaching position at the school. I taught English I Pre-AP for four years, followed by English IV AP for ten, English and social studies electives for six, and three more years of English IV AP. In 2004, I earned National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification; I renewed this credential in 2014. I am in my third year at Johnson, having joined the faculty in February 2023.

My primary literary interests are James Joyce and Shakespeare. I am proud and excited to be in my twenty-fifth year of teaching. I love my job and appreciate the opportunity to teach the literature I love and to inspire students.
