Masters of Science Educational Administration
Mr. Gary Comalander
I grew up in an education family, and I am a proud NEISD product of Colonial Hills ES, Jackson MS, and Churchill HS student. I have spent over half of my life going to school or working in education in NEISD. I participated in football, basketball, and track during my high school years and football at Baylor University. I am very fortunate to have met my wife, Valerie, in San Antonio and we have been married for 30 years. We have two sons, Colton, 2014 graduate of Johnson, and Jack, 2020 graduate of Johnson, that we are very proud of. When not working at school or attending a school event, I enjoy spending time with my family and golfing.
I went to Baylor University where I received a Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1995, I earned a Master of Science Educational Administration degree from Texas A & M University – Kingsville. I began my teaching and coaching career at Marble Falls HS in 1986. After two years, I moved to Marshall High School in NISD where I taught and coached for 10 years. After one year at Southside HS, I moved to Churchill HS to rejoin NEISD. In 2009, I became an assistant principal at Lee High School and in 2012, I was named the principal of Bush Middle School. For the past four years, I have been the proud principal at the best high school in San Antonio, Claudia Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson HS. As I enter my 37th year in education as the principal of Johnson HS, I am looking forward to working with the students and families of this community every day. I believe that involvement in extracurricular and/or co-curricular activities is a vital part of the overall experience that every student should enjoy before leaving high school.

I am looking forward to another great year with Johnson families and staff! Go Jags!
Before joining the Johnson Administrative Team in 2016, I was the Assistant Director at The Academy of Creative Education (ACE) for four years. I joined the North East ISD family in 2008 as an English teacher for the STEM Academy at L.E.E. High School.
I have lived in many different states and countries as my father was in the US Army. I graduated in 1994 from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts in English and earned my Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in 2012 from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Prior to becoming an educator, I worked as a Media Manager in the Advertising field for a variety of clients.
My husband, Brett, is also an educator, and we have one son.
Please contact me anytime with questions; I would very much like to hear from you.

After 15 years in the classroom and coaching, I am excited to begin my Administration career at Johnson as an Assistant Principal!.
Throughout my career I have worked at New Braunfels High, Anderson High(Austin), San Marcos, and most recently at Madison HS here in NEISD. Throughout that journey I have taught many subjects including but not limited to Business, Speech, PE, and with the bulk of my experience coming in the Economics classroom. Additionally, I had the privilege of being called “coach” in many different sports ranging from Football to basketball, soccer, strength and conditioning and High Jump(track). I believe in holding myself and others to high standards through meaningful interactions and relationships built on respect and faith for a better future.
Outside of school, I enjoy hunting and fishing as well as spending time with my wife, Lindsey and our 3 kids at any sporting events we can find.
I am excited to join the Johnson family and look forward to serving and supporting this amazing community!
