Degrees and Certifications:
B.F.A. Theatre Studies - University of Texas at Austin
Mr. Jay Asterman
I am excited to be here with the wonderful faculty at Johnson High School and being apart of the N.E.I.S.D. family. I teach theatre along with Megan Thompson, I'll be teaching Theatre II, Theatre III, Theatre IV and Theatre & Media Communications classes. Megan Thompson and myself will be co-teaching the Theatre Productions I - IV class.
I am a graduate of N.E.I.S.D., went to Stahl and Fox Run Elementary Schools, Driscoll Middle School, Madison High School, and graduated from Churchill High School in 2001. While in middle and high school, I was heavily involved with theatre and speech tournaments. I was part of the cast and crew that went to U.I.L. One Act Play 5A State in 1998 and won 1st place in U.I.L. One Act Play 5A state in 1999 and went to T.F.A. State in 2000 and 2001 and went to NFL Nationals in 2001.
I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in May of 2008 with a B.F.A. in Theatre Studies and certified to teach theatre from Early Childhood through 12th grade. I also have had training in some Television and Film classes, from the software to use to edit movies to classes that dealt with Acting and Directing for the camera.
I lived in Austin for seven years where I was going to school, where I created and ran a theatre company on the UT campus called The Round About Players for seven years. Our shows included anything from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to Don Nigro's Robin Hood to original works that were created and performed by members of the company.
Thanks to my time at UT I have experience in most theatrical areas including tech, design, playwriting, theatre education, and a focus on acting and directing. I also worked the U.I.L. State Meet for the past seven years as the Stage Crew Head and Technical Director mainly working with 3A, 4A, and 5A schools during the meet.
I hope to bring to Johnson the knowledge that I have gathered from being at UT and share it with the students and give them the best experience and knowledge possible. And I can't wait to learn and grow from what the students and my fellow faculty members have to share. I can't imagine being anywhere else.
