Ms. Hernandez

Hello! I am Ms. Heather Hernandez and I am so happy to teach English III at Reagan Highschool.

I am a product of NEISD.  I attended Clear Spring Elementary from Kinder through 5th grade.  I moved on to middle school and attended Krueger for my 6th grade year.  I moved onto Garner where I completed my 7th and 8th grade years and graduated from MacArthur in 2002.  My siblings and I attended the same schools and my parents still live in the same house I grew up in, so I am very familiar with the area, families and students that I now work with.

After high school, I attended Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi, where I earned my Bachelor's of Arts in English in December of 2006.  I worked in retail as a manager after college and knew I wanted to get my teaching certification and become an English teacher.  While going to school for my certification, I worked at the Witte Museum where I got a taste of learning and fun!  I was offered my first teaching position at the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program where I worked with at-risk youth who had been removed from their districts.  I taught all subjects 5-12th grade for three years.  As I worked with these students, I noticed a commonality amongst most of them.  A weak literacy foundation.  I realized then that I wanted to go back to school to begin my Master's in Reading and become a Master Reading teacher and Reading Specialist.  I wanted to be able to teach students in high school and middle school literacy to help make their lives easier and give them a better chance at life.  I began my journey for my Masters at Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi.

I moved back to San Antonio and transferred my coursework to UTSA.

I began working at my Alma Mater--MacArthur--in 2012 as a 9th grade English teacher.  I stayed 4 1/2 years at that grade level. In December of 2016 I graduated with my Master's of Education in Reading.  In January of 2017 I became an ESL teacher and began working with both teachers and students.  I moved on to Krueger Middle School as an Instructional Coach for English Language Arts and Reading where I worked mostly with teachers.  I also taught and ran the ESL program.  After a year and a half in middle school, I moved to central office where I became a District Literacy Specialist.

I have transitioned back into the classroom and am excited to be starting my 13th year in Education.

I am very excited to work with each and everyone of you!

I have a son that was born in November of 2020 named Jack and love spending time with him.
