Ms. Raj Kumaraswamy
Hi! My name is Raj Kumaraswamy (KOO-MAH-RUH-SWAH-MEE) and I am new to Reagan this 2022-23 school year! This will be my 18th year of teaching, but only my second year in San Antonio (the previous one at Young Women’s Leadership Academy in SAISD). I moved here with my husband and two small kids (ages 6 and 3) last February (the weekend of the winter storm– what a welcome!)
I grew up in Orange County, California back when there were still orange trees there. :) I went to the University of California at Berkeley, graduating with a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and then worked for the university for a few years before deciding to go to graduate school at Teachers College Columbia University in NYC. And that is where I began my teaching career– at some of the best public schools in Manhattan and the Bronx.
I am passionate about teaching science and keeping content current and relatable. My goal is to bring this to the classroom each day and hopefully inspire the same sort of passion in my students, or at least make learning interesting and relevant! I have taken advantage of opportunities to further my own knowledge and am always excited to bring these experiences into the classroom. I have visited the Galápagos Islands, done spinal cord research at Columbia University, as well as coral reef research at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in Australia.
I look forward to becoming a part of the Reagan community and since I still feel new to San Antonio, I welcome all recommendations for good food and fun in the area! Can’t wait to meet you!
