Activities

Activity Day 1 - Read Aloud/Create a Library Map
Read aloud If Maps Could Talk. Share p.4-9, 14-15 only. Stop to discuss important vocabulary.
Begin with a discussion of items that are in the library (shelves, desks, tables, trashcans, etc.).
Separate the class into 2 groups (One led by the librarian and one led by the teacher). Work together to build a floor map using a sheet/shower curtain as an outline and blocks/tissue boxes as “landmarks” (ie. shelves, furniture, door, etc.)
Take turns using the Direction Cards to lay out a plan for how to get from the “door” of the library to their favorite book. Have a peer follow the directions to see if they can get to the favorite book.
Activity Day 2 - Read a Map
Provide students a paper copy of the library space’s floor map. This map should include major landmarks in your library.
Students will draw a route to their favorite book. Label where their book is and where they check out (use a word bank).
Extension
-
Students can program Beebots or Dash robots to follow the path to their favorite book on the large floor map.
-
This phase is intended to:
Encourage students to demonstrate understanding of the information gathered, and synthesize into an appropriate format.
Key ideas:
- Allow student choice in tool/presentation
- Use an appropriate mode of delivery, based on the topic and audience
- Consider written, oral, and multimodal
