Ms. Laura Garcia

Hello Mavericks! My name is Laura Garcia and I am excited to be your Engineering teacher here at Madison High School. This is my first year teaching at Madison, however I have prior teaching experience as a computer science teacher for Northside ISD’s Health Careers High School and as a technology applications teacher at San Antonio ISD’s YWLA. I completed my student teaching with NEISD at Lopez Middle School and I am extremely happy to be back in the district.

I attended Redland Oaks Elementary, Driscoll Middle School, and I am a graduate of MacArthur High School. I received my bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Texas at Austin. I worked in the sports industry for teams in the MiLB and the NBA. I later went on to Texas State University for a second bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. I had the exciting opportunity to complete my internship with NASA at the Johnson Space Center’s WEAR Lab where I worked on data processing software for a wearable CO2 monitor astronauts used on the International Space Station. Upon graduation, I worked at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics where I developed software for fighter jets and I later went on to work for Southwest Research Institute in their space science division where I helped develop web applications for NASA, ESA, and SwRI scientists.

I decided to leave the tech industry to pursue a master’s in education at Texas State University to teach and encourage more students to pursue opportunities in STEM careers. I use interactive activities and project-based learning in my courses so that students have hands-on experience as they would in the industry. I am excited to share my real-world experiences with my students and I look forward to another exciting school year.
