•  Welcome to English IV AP Literature and Composition!  This class is designed to be equivalent to a college literature course, so we will focus on practical instruction in the principles and methods of clear and effective writing, and in analyzing and evaluating poetry, essays, and prose.  The course will provide training in the skills of literary analysis, with specialized composition skills.  We will spend time in the writing process, including analyzing audience and purpose, prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, and editing, so that you become more comfortable and confident writers who express their ideas and opinions clearly and effectively.

Writing well, thinking critically, and analyzing and synthesizing texts are essential skills for success on the AP exam and in college, but also for life as an active citizen in our society.  I hope that as your view of the world expands through literature, you develop a more critical eye toward it.  We will also tie in specific pieces of world literature to our study, including Things Fall Apart, Hamlet, and The Importance of Being Earnest.
