In 1987, he was assigned to C Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 3rd Armored Division, Gelnhausen, Germany, where he served as a Tank Commander, and then as a Tank Gunner assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment.
Upon completion of his overseas tour in 1991, CSM Harris was assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 24th Infantry Division, where he served as a Tank Platoon Sergeant and Master Gunner. In 1995, he was transferred to West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia, to serve as an ROTC Instructor. In 1998, he was assigned to D and B Company, 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as a First Sergeant. In 2000, he transferred to 3rd Headquarters, Fort McPherson, Georgia, where he served as the Operations Noncommissioned Officer In Charge of the 3rd Army Mobilization Liaison Team.
In 2001, he was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, First Infantry Division, Leighton, Germany, where he served as the G-3 Training Sergeant Major and the Operations Sergeant Major. He was later assigned to 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor, 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Germany, where he served as Task Force Command Sergeant Major.
Upon completion of his two consecutive tours in 2005, CSM Harris was assigned to the 120th Infantry Brigade, Division West, 1st Army, where he currently serves as the Brigade Command Sergeant Major, responsible for training and validating thousands of Soldiers deploying from Fort Hood, Texas, in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
CSM Harris' military education includes the Warrior Leader Course, Basic and Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Courses, Combat Life, Savers Course, Sergeant Course, Sergeants Major-Nonresident Course, Airborne Course, Jungle Expert Training Course, Anti-Armor Leader's Course, and the Emergency Preparedness Course. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Management and an Associates Degree in Business Studies from Wayland Baptist University.
His military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Army Commendations Medal with six oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with nine oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal (ninth Award), Overseas Service Ribbon (numeral three), National Defense Service Medal with star, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (numeral four), the Southwest Asia Service Medal (with three bronze stars), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medals, the German Marksmanship Badge (Schutzenschnur) Award (Gold), United States Army Parachutist Badge, the British Parachutist Badge, the Driver's Badge, and the Order of Saint George for his contributions to the Armor and Cavalry community.
