• UIL stands for “University Interscholastic League” which is the governing body for athletic, academic, drama, and music competitions in Texas.  NEISD sponsors academic teams at each of the middle and high schools. Tejeda Middle School has a proud tradition of having one of the most successful academic UIL teams in NEISD.  Students compete in various math, language arts, and social studies events against other schools in NEISD.

    *Times of events are subject to change. It is important to arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled event. Make sure you check with your coach or Ms. Davis to see what you are participating in. 

  • Number Sense:   

    Students solve arithmetic problems using only mental arithmetic skills.  Students have 10 minutes to complete as many problems as they are able.  Students must use blue ink and may not erase, mark-over, scratch out, or show any work.  Students must attend practice sessions to learn the necessary number sense "tricks". This event is open to all grade levels.

    Calculator:

    Students use a special HP calculator to solve problems.  Necessary calculator skills are taught during practice sessions.  The school provides the calculators for practices and meets. This event is open to all grade levels.

    Mathematics: 

    Students solve as many of the 50 multiple choice general mathematics questions as they are able in a 30-minute time period. All three grade levels may participate in mathematics.

    Science: 

    Students answer as many of the 35 questions over General Science in 45 minutes. All grade levels can participate.

    Spelling: 

    Students write selected spelling words from the UIL spelling list.  This event is open to all grade levels.  Participants need to get a spelling list from the coach and attend practices throughout the year.

    Dictionary Skills: 

    Students use dictionaries to answer multiple choice questions about word usage, word origins, and definitions.  All three grades participate in this event.  Students need to attend practices so they become familiar with the dictionary and the types of questions tested.

    Maps, Graphs, and Charts: 

    Students use an atlas to help them answer multiple choice questions dealing with maps, charts and graphs.  This event is open to all grade levels

    Social Studies:

    Students answer as many of the multiple choice chess questions as they can in the 30 minute time period.  Questions cover chess strategies, the characteristics of the six different chess pieces, and board movement. All three grades may participate.
