Miles and miles of inspiration

Sandoval running

If you want to be inspired, spend a minute with Bradley Middle School’s Azalia Sandoval.

She is a sixth-grade student who inspires not only her friends but also the adults in life.

“What inspires me about Azalea is her unbreakable spirit on this campus,” said Bradley Principal Brenda Cerroni. “She is never down. She’s always working to help bring others up.”

But that unbreakable spirit didn’t come easy for Azalia.

“I was missing a tibia at birth,” said Azalia. “Our mom had a decision to amputate or to be in a wheelchair. She chose for me to be amputated.”

Azalia spent the first 92 days of her life in the NICU. She was born with something called VACTERL Association. It’s a disorder that affects multiple body systems. But Azalia is a fighter and an athlete.

Sandoval ready to race

She’s an avid runner.

And she’s got the medals to prove it.

She’s constantly competing, including national tournaments.

Next week, she will compete in the 2022 Desert Challenge Games in Arizona.

It’s an international competition with athletes from over 14 countries.

But Azalia has her eyes on a bigger prize.

“You got to train really hard to be a Paralympian,” said Azalia. “I plan to go and get all the gold medals.”

“I fully expect to see her in the Olympics in 2028,” said Cerroni. “She just has a drive, and she will not be stopped.”

Good luck at the Desert Challenge, Azalia. We can’t wait to watch you inspire others.
