NEISD: A Love Story

Alexis and her husband

"He noticed me first, obviously.”

Alexis Bonilla laughs as she recalls the beginnings of her relationship with Dalton Miller.

They were in sixth grade at Bush Middle School.

“We met waiting for the bus after school,” said Bonilla. “We ‘dated’ like typical sixth graders, messaging on AOL instant messenger was big then. We would see each other in the passing periods or walk to lunch together.”

Like many young love stories, this one just needed to get the timing right.

They ended up at different high schools.

Alexis went to Reagan High School.

Dalton when to Warren High School to play football for his dad.

But they stayed in touch through the years.

“We would share happy birthdays, Merry Christmas, Happy Thanksgiving, and ‘good luck’ text messages over the years for sports and dance,” said Bonilla. “I remember getting on the bus after our football games to look up the Warren score so that I could text him ‘Great game!’ or ‘You’ll get them next time!’ I really just wanted an excuse to message him.”

As fate would have it, they both ended up at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) after graduating in 2012.

“After four years of friendship at different schools, we were finally back on the same campus together,” said Bonilla. “He was playing football, and I was on the Pom squad. That was something special to both of us. We hung out with each other a lot that first semester. We knew we both liked each other, but it didn’t feel quite our time… yet.”

Yet.

They finally rekindled their relationship in 2019 -- attending a wedding together in New Braunfels—and the rest is history.

They got married this past September.

And Alexis found her way back to Reagan.

She’s now the Dance and Drill Team Director at her alma mater.

“Although we went to different high schools, it was really the foundation of friendship we built at Bush that kept us connected for many years and ultimately led us to becoming man and wife.”

Happy Valentine’s Day from NEISD.
