Mr. Gabriel A. Oviedo
As I enter my 19th year teaching, I reflect upon the fact that students are often teachers and teachers are sometimes students. I learn much from my students, and I hope that they, too, take away something from my class. While it is important to learn literary terms and to be aware of great works of literature, I hope that that something students learn transcends English III AP or GT. I hope that they become critical thinkers, reflecting upon who they are and how they think. The opening days of a new school year is very much like the opening of Johnson High School-excitement for the changes ahead, wonder about the future, and a curious questioning about who will walk through the door.
As my students walk through my door, they can reflect upon the fact that I have been happily married to my wife, Tracy, for 12 years. Together, we have two intelligent and caring children, Ian and Alyson. Ian is 10 years old and is starting his last year in elementary school, while Alyson is five and starting kindergarten.
As a father, I can appreciate the need to balance an academic life with a family life; as an educator, I can appreciate the rigor required for a successful future not just at Johnson High School but beyond.
I hope that this year will be exciting, eventful, and full of inquiry!
