Teacher Feature: ISA's Mitzi Moore

“If you take all the students that I have taught, you can fill up the Tobin and the Majestic Theater all at the same time, and there would still be people standing in the back.”

Mitzi Moore has been teaching at North East ISD schools for 34 years.

She started at Wood Middle School.

“One of the little boys next door is now my boss.”

Moore is now teaching at NEISD’s International School of the Americas (ISA).

That little boy in the sixth-grade class next door grew up to be ISA’s Principal Steve Magadance.

She loves stories like that—of student success. And of getting the chance to impact her kids and have them impact her in return.

“What I’ve learned is that students need to have space to bring themselves into the assignments. I have learned a lot from what the students have said at the end of a unit. I’ll give them a survey, and they give me great ideas.”

Mitzi offers her students lessons in the classroom and in the community.

Any given year, she’s spearheading community service events helping students rack up hundreds of hours of volunteer work and impact on their community.

“Students might not remember the lessons in class, but they’re going to remember the times we spent on Saturdays doing graffiti wipeouts or working at the food bank. So I hope students will carry with them this idea of giving back to the community, that it’s not just about them, but they can make the world a better place.”

Moore will retire at the end of this school year, but the learning and teaching won’t stop.

She will learn new things like bird watching and gardening. As far as teaching goes, Moore will be posting about her travels around San Antonio on her bike named Rosie. You can follow them on her Instagram page @rosiethebicycle.
