About Us

The Wood Mariachi Juvenil Los Charros is a unique ensemble offered at Wood MS. We are the only Mariachi program in the district that holds classes daily. We perform across the district and the city throughout the year. The Mariachi Class offers students multiple opportunities to learn various instruments. Students enjoy singing and performing!

Academic Contests open to all middle school students. These cover all the TEKS our students will need to learn in middle school. We offer Math, Number Sense (Mental Math), Calculator Skills, Maps-Charts-Graphs, Social studies, Spelling, Science, Dictionary Skills, and Chess Puzzles. 

We offer 3 agriculture courses for our students.  Food science is available for our 6th grade students, investigating careers for 7th grade, and Intro to Ag in 8th grade.  The 8th grade course is a high school credit.  We have a chicken coup and chickens for our Ag students to raise.  Our students are building raised beds to start growing flowers, fruits and vegetables.

We have one of the only middle school dance teams in our district.  Our dance teams perform at our home football and basketball games.  They have also performed at outside events at our feeder high school.  Our dance team also performed a surprise flash mob of Thriller for the enjoyment of our students and staff.

We offer 2 robotics courses for our students.  Students can take robotics in 6th grade and again in 8th grade for high school credit.  We are one of the top performing programs in the state.  We have qualified teams for the state competition for 10 straight years.  In the past 2 years alone, we have qualified 11 teams for state, nationals, and world’s competitions.

We began offering musical theater in the 2021-2022 school year.  We have had over 50 students sign up each year for this unique elective.  We have had a major week-long performance of Moana.

We began using Be Better as our school motto during the 2022-2023 school year.  This decision was made because we can measure how much better we get.  For example, we can chart how much better we do on a test, or on a run, or in the weight room.  Being Better is something tangible that we can strive for.  Being Better is something that we can all attain no matter what our present level is.  Being better is something that we can use as motivation for continual improvement.  To be a Wood Wrangler is to Be Better.

Our Texas History teacher at the time, Kathy Padilla, invited each of our students to add a tile to this mural to pay tribute to the victims and families of the victims of the September 11th tragedy. This mural was completed in 2002.

The time capsule was created as a school project in 1987 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Constitution Day.

Some of the items included a Coca Cola can, Converse sneakers, and various magazines and newspapers.

The headline on one of the newspapers was about Pope John Paul's visit to San Antonio.

Back then, there were two newspapers in town -- the San Antonio Express-News and the San Antonio Light.

The time capsule also included a picture of a rotary phone, a cassette tape, a VHS tape and a floppy disc. 

NEISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian G. Gottardy was a guest speaker at the event. He said he started his career as a teacher at Wood Middle School. 

David Dunn was a student at the school when the time capsule was hidden in 1987. He had the opportunity to unlock the time capsule, along with his son, Cameron, who is now a student at the school. 

"I remembered a lot of it -- the movie, cassette tapes, the Converse shoes," he said. "It was a trip down memory lane."

"It was pretty cool. I liked it," said Cameron Dunn.

After the unveiling ceremony, students packed modern treasures into a new time capsule, so students in the future will get to have a similar experience.
