Wood is bowled over by support

The Wood Middle School PE and Athletic coaches have just raised nearly $20,000 for their students.

That money will go toward athletic bags, basketballs, practice jerseys, and other student athletic needs.

While that feat is incredible and should be applauded, it’s how they did it that really stands out.

The Wood team decided to host a Cosmic Bowl-a-thon.

Friends, family, and the community pledged money per pin or made flat donations.

But pulling off the Bowl-a-thon took an extra level of community support.

“We sought out help from within the NEISD District and utilized our Districtwide resources and equipment,” explained Wood Coach Laura Coggins. “Cameron Schmidt at Encino Elementary provided some cosmic logistics she had implemented while hosting her very own successful bowling unit.  We were also able to borrow bowling equipment from Adam Rodriguez, an NEISD APE Specialist and Lisa Keogh at Northwood Elementary.”

So, they set up a 20-lane bowling alley in their gym with strobe lights, neon tape, glow sticks, a fog machine and disco music.

And the rest is history.

“Every athlete bowled five frames and had a blast,” said Coggins. “We have been blown away with the support we have received from our parents and community. It is so special to see family and friends write such encouraging things to their athletes with their donations.  We cannot wait to start purchasing our new equipment for our athletes to begin using ASAP!”
