Carson "Poppy" Jones and Hayley Young

Poppy and Hayley with Dr. MaikaPoppy and Hayley serve as sign language interpreters for Oak Meadow Elementary School’s recorded school announcements each week. Despite having adult interpreters on campus, Poppy and Hayley wanted to lead in this role this school year. They have been active members of the school’s ‘Sign and Shine Club’ but have taken their signing to the next level.  They interpret portions of daily announcements as part of the student News Crew leaders, and provide a crucial service for the school’s deaf and hard of hearing students each morning. They spend countless hours practicing and work with Oak Meadow interpreters to make sure they sign correctly for each week’s recording.  With the year beginning virtually, these students even participated on Zoom from home.  They are passionate about helping, and we are very grateful.
