It’s wonderful when our schools reach out to each other when special needs arise. Recently, this parent group from Walzem Elementary came to the aid of our Afghanistan refugee students at Jackson Middle School. Jackson students wear uniforms, and their female refugee students wanted to adhere to the campus dress code without comprising their culture. They needed long navy skirts which were very difficult to find. So, these parents who form the sewing club at Walzem spent more than 100 hours collecting material and sewing skirts for almost 40 refugee students. This gift of time and talent helped students who are still adjusting to a new school and community.
