If you’ve ever wanted to have a conversation with Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr., Charles Lindbergh, Neil Armstrong, or myriad of other influential people in our history, Krueger Middle School was the place to be.

Approximately 120 students dressed as influential figures in history, in commemoration with both Black History Month in February and Woman’s History Month in March. Together, they participated in a Live Wax Museum experience for both parents and staff.

“The idea behind it is for the students to work with their cohort teacher to research and develop character and personality of historical figures, whether it be famous black writers, mathematicians, scientists, historians, women in history and people in aerospace and aviation,” said Christin Herrada, SETA (Space and Engineering Technologies Academy) Aerospace teacher.

Students prepared presentation boards, props, full costumes and a 1-minute speech on the person they were representing. Parents walked through the displays and placed coins in each student’s cup to “start” the presentation.

William Rowe portrayed Leonhard Euler who was a proficient mathematician in the 1700s.

In his opinion, it made learning fun and more engaging because you had to do so much.

“This is a lot more hands on and you have to really get into all the details,” said Rowe. “You have to dress in character. You have to learn everything about them. And then you have to be able to explain it to other people, so it takes a lot more effort.”

Anabelia Cavazos, portrayed Susan B. Anthony and was amazed by some of the things she learned about this champion of the women’s suffrage movement and equal rights.

“She started to protest at a young age, only being 16 when she started,” said Cavazos.

It was a great experience for all, and truly brought history to life for these young minds.
