North East ISD now has a direct line to NASA. Izaak De Leon is NEISD’s new NASA Instructional Coach. He will work with teachers at our new Space and Engineering Technologies Academy (SETA). But one day a week, he will work directly with NASA to get our students and teachers the latest information from the NASA teams working on space exploration.
“I am really excited about this opportunity,” said De Leon. “The teams at NASA have been very supportive. I am looking forward to this partnership.”
SETA launches on August 14 with four career pathways. SETA students can select aerospace, aviation technology, computer science, or manufacturing & mechanical engineering.
NEISD is only the second school in history to acquire a Space Act Agreement with NASA. Our joint effort brings invaluable field expertise and resources that are seamlessly incorporated into every aspect of our educational experience.
De Leon is no stranger to the exciting opportunities NEISD provides our students. He attended Camelot Elementary School, Ed White Middle School and graduated from North East School of the Arts (NESA) at LEE High School.
“I am able to serve the families and students in the same neighborhoods and communities that I grew up in.,” said De Leon.
After graduation, he got interested in NASA and space exploration. Before signing on to help jump-start NEISD’s newest magnet program, he managed the NASA Research Center at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
“This is really a full circle story for me -- from science club president at Ed White to NASA Instructional Coach for SETA,” said De Leon. “When I was a student, there were great opportunities, but they were mainly spearheaded by individual teachers. With SETA, you have an entire faculty and staff between two schools that have been brought together under a single mission. And on top of that, the partnership with the NASA Space Act Agreement, the opportunities are limitless for these students.”
Students from all over San Antonio, regardless of address or boundaries, are eligible to apply to SETA. The program is currently accepting students for the sixth-grade class at Krueger Middle School and the ninth-grade class at Roosevelt High School.
