Mrs. Phyllis Malone
Mrs. Malone has been the Orchestra Director at Garner Middle School for the past thirty one years. She earned a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music Education from the University of Kansas. She also holds Violin Performance and Piano Performance minors from the University of Kansas. Other graduate work was done at Texas Christian University.
Previous teaching experience includes teaching Strings and Orchestra in the Fort Worth ISD, St. Louis, Missouri and previously in NEISD. She has also worked with the Greater Fort Worth Youth Orchestras, the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, and has taught private violin and viola lessons since graduating from college. She also performed with the Ft. Worth Symphony, the St. Louis Philharmonic and various chamber music and community orchestras.
Mrs. Malone is active in Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Orchestra Directors Association and American String Teachers Association. Mrs. Malone was selected Teacher of the Year for Garner Middle School 2004; NEISD Middle School Teacher of the Year, 2004 and NEISD Overall Teacher of the Year, 2004. She received the KENS 5 TV/SACU Excel Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004. Her students were honored by being asked to perform for the ExCel Award Banquet that year. She was a nominee for the "Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching" in 2004 and was also named "Spurs Teacher of the Game", 2004. She was honored as Walmart Teacher of the Year in 2008.
Mrs. Malone has presented workshops for MENC/TMEC in Dallas in 2003; for American String Teachers Association in Kansas City in 2006; and was honored to conduct several Region Orchestra Clinic Concert Weekends. She served on the Board of Directors for Youth Orchestras of San Antonio and was Middle School Orchestra Coordinator for TMEA Region XII for many years. Garner Middle School Orchestra students served as a demonstration orchestra for a clinic (Creating a New Ensemble: Harp and Young Strings) at TMEA in 2008 and 2017. Mrs. Malone presented workshops at Texas Orchestra Directors Association Convention in 2009 and at Texas Music Educators Association in 2010. She presented a workshop in Atlanta in March 2012 for the American String Teachers Association. Mrs. Malone was honored by Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Beta Tau) as Master Educator in 2012. She was selected for Membership in Mu Omicron, Professional Orchestra Fraternity in 2014. Mrs. Malone was awarded a National PTA Life Achievement Award in 2014. In 2016 Mrs. Malone was presented with the Joseph B. Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.
Mrs. Malone enjoys having student observers and student teachers from area universities in her classroom and enjoys the time she spends mentoring and working with young orchestra directors around the state. Mrs. Malone also enjoys working with elementary and middle school Orchestra students and expects them to work hard, enjoy music and be the best that they can be.
Mrs. Malone also teaches the 5th grade strings classes at Northwood, Oak Grove, Regency Place and Serna Elementaries. Orchestra students at Garner consistently perform well at all concerts, UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest, Solo and Ensemble Contest, Region Orchestra, and at functions throughout the community.
Mrs. Malone enjoys spending time with her family--husband, two daughters, son-in-law and three grandchildren--Luke, Amelia and Corinne.
