Reagan High School alumni Diego Castro

Diego Castro learned so much while growing up at North East ISD. While academics were certainly important to him, one of the biggest takeaways from his time in our schools was learning not to quit on himself.

He attended Canyon Ridge and Las Lomas Elementary School before moving on to Bush Middle School and, finally, Reagan High School, where he graduated in 2022.

"I am currently a sophomore at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, where I received the Presidential Merit Scholarship, and I am a Bill & Patricia Moody Endowment Scholar in the class of 2026. I am pursuing my undergraduate degree in User Experience Design."

Recently, Diego had the opportunity to work on a project in the Austin area called Knowbility's Accessibility Internet Rally (AIR). Diego and his team worked to ensure that people who need assistive technology have access to nonprofit organization websites. They redeveloped the website's accessibility to meet legislative standards.

His time as a Cross Country runner at Reagan helped him learn about mental and physical perseverance. Every practice was a challenge as he trained to make his time trials. It also helped him navigate school as a student with Dyslexia and ADHD. He persevered through every challenge and already sees significant results as a college student.

"NEISD prepared me in that I recognized early on that I learned differently from others, but I was still goal-driven. I have been able to get to where I am now and continue to pursue my future goals."

Looking back on the teachers who positively impacted him, Diego almost had too many to count. There was Mrs. Craig and Mrs. Howell at Las Lomas and Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Fisher at Bush. At Reagan, Mrs. Elder, Mrs. Watson-Fears, Mrs. Weaver, Mr. Ice, Mrs. Gardner, Coach Freeman and administrator Mr. Salinas all came to mind.

"All of these educators made an impact on me and allowed me to show them what I was capable of. I attribute a portion of my success to these elementary through high school educators who embody the passion it takes to ignite a student to find their potential."

Congratulations, and good luck in the future, Diego!
