Greg Dobie helps open up a world of opportunities

POSTED DECEMBER 2023

Education can open up a world of opportunities.

You can see that on full display in North East ISD’s Adult Education classes.

And it’s one of Greg Dobie’s favorite parts of the job.

Dobie teaches NEISD’s Adult English as a Second Language 4 class and a Citizenship class at the Ferrari Center several days a week.

“These classes can be life-changing. These classes can help people get work. Or my citizenship class. That absolutely changes lives. It changes our community.”

Dobie became passionate about adult education while living in California. When he moved to San Antonio for graduate school 20 years ago, he knew he wanted to continue to follow his passion. NEISD was one of the few school districts in the area even offering adult education classes, so he signed up to help. He’s now a credentialed adult education teacher for our District. He is also an ESL specialist for the University of Texas at San Antonio.

NEISD offers several different courses for adults in our community free of charge. Adults can learn English, prepare for high school equivalency exams and learn career training. The goal of the Adult Education program is to inspire our students with practical, applicable lessons so they are motivated to create ongoing personal goals.

“This is serving an education purpose, but it’s serving the community for sure. Students in the adult program are often the parents of the k-12 students. The adults are then modeling what education is supposed to be about.”

NEISD’s Adult Education classes are making a difference, and Dobie is the kind, caring and passionate spark behind much of the impact these classes are having on our community.
