“You’re a blueprint to what an adult looks like.”

NEISD alum David Chancellor smiling David Chancellor knows the value of a good coach. He had more than a few during his time growing up in North East ISD. And those relationships changed his life.

“My bio should say this: Jackson-Keller Elementary, Nimitz Middle School and Robert E. Lee High School. That’s my legacy. That’s how I got to where I am today.”

Chancellor graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1990, where he played quarterback on the football team. Sports taught him that life isn’t about wins and losses. It’s about showing up and giving it your all. His coaches taught him how to commit to himself, his teammates and something bigger than himself. Chancellor shared that message with coaches from every NEISD high school Friday, July 30.

“I don’t know how you do it day after day, game after game, year after year, season after season. And you do it with such ease and such grace,” said Chancellor. “I am in awe of what you men and women do. You are so much more than a coach. You’re a father figure, a mother figure, a parent. You’re a blueprint to what an adult looks like.”

So often, our coaches are our greatest teachers. They teach us about life, loss, redemption and how to handle every disappointment and victory. They give so much of their time and invest so much in our student athletes.

And those life lessons stay with them long after they graduate. Just ask David Chancellor.

“My coaches taught me how to win with class and how to lose with grace,” said Chancellor. “That’s what they did for me and that’s what you do every day for our kids. I believe in the impact that sports has had on me and on all student athletes when it comes to them being mentally, physically and emotionally prepared for life.”
