#NEISDcares | A quick detour ends with a big surprise

Hardy Oak Donut

“I was driving to get breakfast for the family and noticed the teachers and staff out in front of the school under a tent.”

Jase Himmelstein couldn't help but notice the crowd outside of Hardy Oak Elementary School.

"I called home to try to find out what was going on, and we figured out that they were handing out technology to families who needed Chromebooks and hotspots,” said Himmelstein.

Before school could start online, teachers and staff across the District braved the heat to hand out laptops, hotspots, textbooks and instruments curbside-style. After seeing this, Jase took a little detour. He stopped by a donut shop and grabbed the Hardy Oak team a box of coffee and donuts.

“Our teachers and staff are on the front lines, not just now during the pandemic but also under normal circumstances, making sure that our kids are learning, growing, and are in a caring environment,” said Himmelstein. “Now more than ever, they need to know how much we appreciate and support them as they are going back to school in such an uncertain situation.”

It's a bittersweet year for the Himmelsteins. Hardy Oak has been a part of their family since they moved here five years ago, but this is the last year the family will have a Hardy Oak Hornet in their home. Their youngest will go to Lopez next fall.

The Himmelsteins are doing what they can to show how NEISD cares through these uncertain times.

Big or small, everyone has a story to tell.
