Reagan sophomore spends summer preparing teachers for upcoming school year

Reagan High School Sophomore, Maya Castañeda, is ready for the upcoming school year, and thanks to her efforts, North East ISD special education teachers are too.

Castañeda spent five weeks of her summer sewing 100 clear view masks and then donated them to the District.

“Our goal is to have around 1,500 to 2,000 masks,” said Jan Greer DeHaven, NEISD’s Director of Special Education. “So, this is a huge help.”

More than 60 volunteers are working to help meet the District’s need for clear view masks. These masks are essential for special education teachers and students because they allow students to see more of their teachers’ faces. For deaf students, these masks are invaluable, because they enable them to read their teacher’s lips and see them smile.

All told, DeHaven estimates volunteers like Castañeda, have saved the District more than $20,000 by making these much-needed masks for the upcoming school year.

“We couldn’t do it without them,” said Greer.

Castañeda is just one NEISD student showing how #NEISDcares through this pandemic.

“I think right now, it’s really important to give back and help,” said Castañeda. “I think any sort of helpful thing that you can do is really, really important.”
