Institute of CyberSecurity and Innovation Conversion Project - Phase 1 and 2

The District purchased the vacant Walmart Facility on Nacogdoches with 2015 Bond Program Global Contingency funds for the purpose of establishing the North East Institute of Cybersecurity and Innovation (iCSI) as a new curriculum offering within the District’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) Program. Renovation of the vacant Walmart Facility into the District’s Institute of Cybersecurity and Innovation will be completed in multiple construction phases due to limited funding availability. Construction work on Phase 1, which consists of two security operations center classrooms, a collaborative learning area, the main entry lobby, and administration support area was completed for student instruction in Aug. 2021. Phases 3B and 4 will be completed as funding becomes available either through the Maintenance & Operations (M&O) budget, a future bond program, and/or potentially other funding sources. As a result of recent curriculum revisions, the CTE Department requested that both Phases 2 and 3A be completed and ready to support the instructional plan/course offerings for the start of the August 2021 school year. To accomplish this requirement, the Construction Management and Engineering Department reviewed the phasing plan and recommended that Phases 1, 2, and 3A be constructed concurrently. These program areas became available for use for the start of the August 2021 school year.

April 26, 2021 - Contingency funds from other programs were released and repurposed along with other M&O funds to fund Phases 2 and 3A of this project, which provided for construction and finish-out of Classrooms 3 & 4 (Cisco Network Computer Labs) and Computer Labs 9 & 10, including furniture & technology equipment. The completion of Phase 3A provided classroom and lab areas necessary to operate the iCSI program through the first two (2) instructional years (Aug. 2021 – Jul. 2023). The remaining instructional areas (Computer Labs # 5, 6, 7, and 8 – Phase 3B) along with the competition arena and support spaces will be designed, constructed, and finished-out during a future construction phase.
