Choice Reading- Selecting a Book to Read
-
Reflection Questions
- What is your purpose for reading? Do you read to escape or to understand?
- If you read to escape, you may enjoy fiction with more imaginative or fantastical themes
- If you read to understand, you may enjoy more non-fiction, or fiction genres grounded in reality such as realistic and historical fiction
- What is the last book that you have read? What did you like about it?
- Was it the plot or perhaps the characters that appealed to you? Really think about this. Have you enjoyed these same traits in other things that you have read? Perhaps you enjoy a certain genre.
- See if the author of that book has written other books or if the book is part of a series.
- Can't think of anything that you've read? Consider other narrative formats.
- What about films? Think of the last movie that you liked and ask yourself the same questions above.
- There's also a good chance that some of the movies you like are based on books.
