# Math Resources Place Value, Rounding, Fractions, and Decimals

• ## Extending Place Value with Decimals and Fractions

Third graders are expected to have memorized their facts up to 10 x 10. For multiplication facts practice:

Here are some Math Practice Websites. Just click on the name of the math skill/website.

Decimal and Whole Number Jeopardy (This is good practice for some of the skills this quarter.)

***    Moby Max (You need to use a user name and password that I'll give you.

I want all students to practice at least 30 minutes each week on this website.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.  Place Value, Power of 10, and Expanded Notation

We start the year discussing Place Value to the billions place. We also discuss the value of each digit increasing by a power of ten as we go to the left. Students also need to understand place value as it relates to expanded notation. The following video covers all of these concepts.

2. Greater Than Less Than Song: Comparing whole numbers - greater than and less then symbol

3. Decimals, base ten number system, comparing fractions to decimals, expanded form, and hundredths place

Next we discuss decimals. The video "Math Antics - Decimal Place Value" covers the place value concepts of decimals, including our base ten number system, each place gets 1/10 smaller as we go to the right, comparing fractions to decimals, and expanded form. Fourth graders only need to know values to the hundredths place.

4. Fractions Song - Review numerator and denominator examples

5. Converting base 10 fractions to decimals

Next we spend time converting base 10 fractions to decimals. The video "Math Antics - Converting Base 10 Fractions" covers this concepts well. Fourth graders only need to know how to convert fractions of tenths and hundredths to decimals.

6.  Round Numbers

Students are also expected to be able to round numbers. This "Rounding Numbers Song" by Number Rock has great examples and reminders related to words used (like approximate) and examples of numbers rounded.

7.  Fractions are Parts

8. Working with Parts - Shows comparing and adding fractions.

9. Equivalent Fractions song with examples

10. Comparing Fractions

11. Mixed Numbers
