My name is Gurkan Bekar.  I am excited to be your teacher for this school year, 2024-25.  I have been a teacher for 18 years, and this will be my 15th year at DATA and Roosevelt High School.  I didn't go into teaching right out of college and worked in the customer service industry for many years.  I worked as a manager at a movie theatre in both Texas and Oklahoma.  Here in San Antonio, I helped open the Quarry Market, Northwoods, and Live Oak theatres.  Teaching has helped me embrace my passions for history and literature and my need to give back to the community.  

I have a myriad of interests and hobbies when I am not teaching that include both indoor and outdoor activities.  The word "bored" is not in my vocabulary.  I am not a San Antonio native.  I was a military brat and was actually born in Germany!  I am married and have 2 sons, Alexander-who graduated from DATA High School in 2020- and Christian-who currently attends DATA as a senior.
