NEISD artists attend McNay Spotlight Celebration

mcnay spotlight event

The annual Spotlight Celebration was on Sunday, May 20, at the McNay Art Museum. Schools across San Antonio participated in the event. This year, students responded artistically to the American modernist artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s Leaf Motif, No. 2 painting.  Their creative efforts were on display at the museum for the entire audience to view. The students visited the McNay during the Spotlight year in order to view the actual O’Keeffe painting and learn more about her artwork along with Rosemary Hickman – the Semmes Foundation Education Manager of the McNay – traveling to all of the participating schools to work with them as they created their interpretations of the work.

A McNay team videotaped the students and teachers preparing for the show and the videos were shown at the celebration. Each school had students introduce their video and then all the attending students were invited to come up to be recognized. Afterwards, the students and their families were allowed to tour the beautiful McNay at their leisure.  On conclusion of this event, the curators of the McNay will be selecting some of the students’ responses/artworks to display in the new Community Gallery.  These choices will be announced in the near future.

NEISD schools participating:  Roosevelt High School with teachers S’Lena Hinojosa, Anabell Horton, Ruth Hui, and Kendra Slaughter; Bradley Middle School with teacher Kim Villarreal; Roan Forest Elementary with teacher Lisa Watson; and Vineyard Ranch Elementary with teacher Eileen Brzozowski.
