Lee celebrates future undergrads and military cadets

Lee High School faculty and staff make it their mission to grow and cultivate a college-going culture at the campus. Seeking a degree after high school can be intimidating for many students, especially those who will be the first in their family to attend college or even receive a high school diploma. That’s where the Trinity University College Advising Core comes in. Serving as Trinity Advising Core college advisor at the campus, Annalisa Trevino launched the school’s very own College Signing Day for students heading to a university or serving in the military.

Graduating seniors attending college or joining the military were welcomed to a pep rally atmosphere in the gymnasium on April 25. College representatives, parents and campus staff were on hand to congratulate the seniors on their academic journey through secondary school. Tables draped with paper table clothes sporting college logos and military branch insignias. At the end of the pep rally, the students were encouraged to grab a marker and sign their name next to the college/military branch they will be attending or serving.

“The main purpose is to help create a college-going culture and a cornerstone to that is college-signing day,” said Annalisa Trevino. “Athletes have signing days and I figured it would be a great way to celebrate our seniors because they work so hard.”

Students enjoyed an inspirational message from someone in the San Antonio Spurs Family—Tim Derk, the original Coyote mascot for the team. Derk made his debut as the Coyote in 1983, appearing in over 1,110 games and averaging nearly 200 community appearances a year. Today, he is an associate manager of service innovation for Spurs Sports and Entertainment. He basked in the opportunity to shine a light on the great things waiting in the wings for students continuing their education.
