Johnson athlete earns top spot on U.S. Air Force Academy’s football team

18-year-old Ty Reasoner has scored the appointment of a lifetime.

“I’ve committed to play football at The United States Air Force Academy up in Colorado Springs,” Reasoner explained.

The Johnson High School senior secured a nomination to the prestigious academy from former Congressman Will Hurd.

“It’s always been a dream of mine. To also get the education I get from The Air Force Academy and to serve my country- it’s just an honor,” he said.

The NEISD student said that he’s been able to get this far because of the hard work he’s put in since day one.

“Just work hard and be determined. There’s going to be rough patches, where you doubt yourself and you just don’t feel confident in yourself. But you’ve just got to push through that,
Reasoner said.

Another reason this opportunity means so much to him is because his grandfather also served in the U.S. Air Force.

“I kind of got to see the example that he set for me,” Reasoner explained.

Before joining Johnson, Reasoner attended Roan Forest Elementary, Tuscany Heights and Tejeda Middle School.

“I’ve had some great teachers along the way. From middle school to high school and all the way back to elementary school; I’ve had some great teachers in NEISD.” he recalls.

Reasoner said taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes while being a student-athlete taught him about leadership and time-management.

“I think it’s going to be really important when I go to the Academy because balancing football, military life and academic stuff- it’s going to be pretty tough. But I’m going in thinking I’m pretty well prepared,” he added.

While in college, Reasoner plans to study computer engineering or astronautical engineering.

“Somewhere in that STEM route has always interested me,” he said.

Reasoner will leave for Colorado this June and will find out where he will ultimately be stationed after he completes his four years in the Academy.

“The coaches and especially my family have really supported me through all the tough times, the accomplishments and all the great times too. So, I owe it all to them, I’m doing it for them and I’m thankful for all of them!”
