The road home leads back to NEISD

It took going back to the beginning for Greg Hilbig to find where he truly belongs.

You spend your whole life trying to get away and then you spend the rest of your life trying to get back,” said Hilbig. “I never thought I’d be here. I thought I would take off and say see you later San Antonio.”

Growing up, Hilbig attended Camelot Elementary School, Ed White Middle School and Roosevelt High School. He was on the baseball and tennis teams at Roosevelt and played viola in the orchestra. His plan after high school was to find a way to help people, so he graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) with a psychology degree.

His passion for helping others led to a Master’s Degree in Special Education and a four-year run at Churchill High School working with students in an Alternative Learning Environment (ALE). A phone call from former Roosevelt tennis coach Mike Green sent Greg home.

“Coach Green was always there for us. I saw him all day, every day and that’s how I want my kids to see me.”

Hilbig spent the next four years coaching tennis and teaching geography at Roosevelt. His desire to make a bigger impact sent him to North East ISD’s Administrative Training program – a yearlong internship that trains educators to become District leaders. That journey sent him back to Ed White where he’s been connecting with students as an assistant principal for two years.

“Some people are born to be teachers, but a good majority of us fall into it and grow to love it,” said Hilbig. “There’s a lot of pride here, but really, it’s just nice to be home.”
