Jackson teacher makes virtual learners feel like they’re in the classroom

Virtual learners in Mack Witzel’s classroom are learning through the same lens as their in-person classmates. The Jackson Middle School reading teacher has a camera aimed wherever he’s teaching. This innovative setup makes online learners feel like they’re in the room with him.

“The kids can actually see me writing on the board and they can read everything that we’re going over,” said Witzel. “I’ve really tried to find a balance that will allow them to interact with everybody. I want them to feel like they’re here.”

The addition of one camera has made all the difference. Students who may struggle with feeling disconnected from their schoolwork, teachers and classmates are immersed in the lesson with their peers.

Witzel came up with the idea for a classroom view camera set up in the fall and ran with it. The ability to try new teaching methods that benefit every student first drew him to North East ISD.

“I started subbing for NEISD and I kind of fell in love with middle school all over again,” said Witzel. “The culture and community are consistent at every campus, from student to student and teacher to teacher. It’s the entire District and that’s something I’ve always looked for.”

NEISD teachers have been stretching themselves to find a way to provide a traditional classroom learning experience in an unusual year. Witzel is one of the many innovators working hard to make every student feel like they belong.

“They are some of the sharpest, most resilient individuals that I know. I couldn’t be more proud to call them my students.”
