Roosevelt JROTC Battalion continues mission despite distance

Discipline and routine are keys to success for anyone but are especially important to members of Roosevelt High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC).

“The biggest priority about our staff meetings is still the same as before the quarantine,” said Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Katya Rodriguez. “Ensuring that all of our cadets are still able to communicate and now finish school work is our responsibility as leaders.”

So the JROTC Battalion has relied heavily on virtual meetings to get them through. It’s provided opportunities for them to lean on one another for strength.

“We always hit a point where we feel lonely, and the staff meetings help us cope,” said Cadet Captain Rosielvira Padilla. “Because even though we are all in quarantine, we can still communicate on Zoom and understand that the world is still revolving.”

The cadets work with others to complete schoolwork, continue their daily workouts, and practice their skills training.

“These practices are helping my cadets move around and stay active during a time when most people would be sitting on the couch and not doing much at all,” said Cadet Captain Brennan Sierra.

These cadets are demonstrating that leadership is a vital skill, especially in periods of difficulty.
