Roosevelt student shows off newly-discovered talent

Samuel Vasquez is a first-year painting student at Roosevelt High School. He’s always drawn pictures, but this year he decided to try something new. Art Teacher Kendra Slaughter says he’s got a knack for it, “He pays attention to detail.” And it didn’t take long for her notice this painting was going to be different than the others, “he just did such a nice job with the symmetry of it,” adding, “he did a beautiful job, and I felt like it really needed to be seen by the public.”

“I was surprised, I was like wow that’s crazy,” said Vasquez when asked how he felt about his painting being picked for a public gallery at Region 20. “I was just like an eye-opener for me; I was like wow, I can paint!”

The Painting II class at Roosevelt is Vasquez’s first painting class, but he says after this, he’s found a new passion and plans on taking other painting classes in the future.

His art, along with several NEISD student’s works, will be on display during February at Region 20, located at 1314 Hines Ave.
