Jackson-Keller teacher embraces her calling to serve others

“This is my home,” said Rosina Johnson. “I feel very comfortable here, and I feel like I’m making a difference."

Johnson believes service to others is her true calling in life. Every day, she answers that call by dedicating herself to the needs of the students, parents and community as a teacher at Jackson-Keller Elementary School. Johnson has devoted her career to students receiving special education services, and she’s beloved in every classroom across campus.

Johnson and her husband often feel compelled to find a way to give back to young students during the holiday season. In December, the couple purchased two bicycles to give away in a drawing as a reward for students with perfect attendance. Johnson’s giving and humble nature is unwavering and a point of admiration for everyone on the Jackson-Keller campus. She considers this quiet act of kindness as another way she can fulfill her calling to serve others.

“I didn’t think anything of it, but the kids were so excited,” said Johnson. “I think for me, the reward is just seeing how happy they are. I think that’s my purpose in life, to serve others.”

Building relationships with people in the community she loves is part of what has kept Johnson at Jackson-Keller for the last 14 years. In fact, it’s a point of pride for the dedicated educator.

“We have the kind of relationship where [the parents] feel comfortable enough to call me at home,” said Johnson. “They trust me, and I love having that relationship with my kids and their parents. Being their teacher makes me so proud.”

She’s found her second home at Jackson-Keller, and she’ll continue to take care of the students, parents and colleagues that bring so much joy and purpose to her life.
