End of Watch: NEISD remembers K-9 officer Leonard

So many of us consider our pets to be part of the family, but Leonard was so much more to police officer and K-9 handler Greg Reusink. The North East Police Department honored K-9 officer Leonard during a special remembrance ceremony on Friday, Jan 10. The trusted and dedicated companion, who was affectionately known as “Lenny,” died in December at the age of 13. He was the first K-9 in the District and performed nearly 3,000 building and vehicle searches during his eight years on the force. He alerted officers to more than 500 instances of contraband during his tenure and assisted officers with educational presentations to students and community members.

Leonard retired from duty in 2017 and lived out his remaining years with officer Reusink and his family. NEISD is indebted to Leonard for his service and efforts in keeping our campuses safe.
