Eisenhower video assignment encourages college aspirations

Technology students at Eisenhower Middle School are recruiting faculty members to learn more about their college options. Each technology class has the opportunity to create college segments for "Ike News." Students are tasked with brainstorming ideas for each segment before interviewing a teacher about their alma mater. This project allows Eisenhower teachers to share what their college is known for, talk about what they studied and their overall experience.

Initiatives like this are part of the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program at Eisenhower. Coordinator Eric Gerber says encouraging conversations about college early on can be vital to establishing the goal of continuing their education after high school.

"I think it's essential that teachers talk about the college they went to and the experiences they had in college to promote the idea of going to college in order to further one's education and result in a more well-rounded, successful life," said Gerber. "We should also be talking about the benefits of community college and vocational education as a means to attain more fulfilling careers that match a student's talents and interests."
