Bulverde Creek students thrive during action-oriented STEM Day

Daurgham Abdelsamie couldn’t wait to spend an entire school day learning about two of his favorite subjects – robotics and programming. Abdelsamie and his peers were surrounded by robots, LEGOs and special guests who helped bring STEM Day to life at Bulverde Creek Elementary School. The third-annual event focused on activities that challenge and strengthen key skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Abdelsamie may just be in fifth-grade, but he already has dreams of one day becoming an astronaut or a scientist. Both careers rely heavily on STEM subjects, which makes activities like robotics and programming essential and fun.

“My favorite part of being in robotics is programming and making fun stuff,” said Abdelsamie. “It makes learning more fun because we get to do activities while we learn and we get to do a lot of stuff that helps us learn. It makes coming to school a lot more fun too.”

Bulverde Creek called in reinforcements to help with STEM Day. Students from LEE High School’s STEM Academy volunteered to assist and teach several activities and KSAT Meteorologist Kaiti Blake stopped by to talk to students about the science and math involved in forecasting.

“This is a day full of problem solving and thinking outside of the box,” said Erika Neuman, fifth-grade teacher. “Everyone on campus is involved so there really is something for everyone. Our fifth-grade students work with the kindergarten students and STEM Academy students from LEE are helping and volunteering in a lot of activities too. It’s a win-win all the way around.”
