NEISD schools team up for pancreatic cancer drive

Family Specialist Martha Diaz rallied together students, teachers and community members at Driscoll and Harris middle schools for a cause that’s very close to her heart. Her father, Federico “Freddy” Rodriguez, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer earlier this year. Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month inspired Diaz to coordinate campus-wide donation drives and awareness campaigns at both campuses throughout the month of November.

Students, faculty and teachers all got involved in the name of Rodriguez and her father’s legacy. Diaz designed special edition t-shirts available for purchase while family specialists provided educational presentations for parents at numerous campuses as part of the awareness campaign.

A team of “Freddy’s Fighters” helped raise $6,000 during an annual walk, and family specialists from Driscoll, Harris, as well as Larkspur East Terrell Hills elementary schools helped raise $3,000 of the overall total. Proceeds from the donation drive will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, which focuses on research, clinical trials, and patient and family advocacy.
