MacArthur orchestra students given statewide music award

Students of the MacArthur High School Orchestra were honored as Texas Music Scholars at a ceremony on Wednesday, May 1. They were nominated for this honor by their director, Jan Garverick, and the award is given by the Texas Music Educators Association, which sponsors the Texas All-State Bands, Orchestras and Choirs. Last year fewer than 2,100 students were named as Texas Music Scholars

This award is given to students who have exhibited outstanding qualities in scholastic merit, musicianship and citizenship in their school and community during the 2018-2019 school year.

The Texas Music Educators Association, headquartered in Austin, Texas, is an association of over 13,000 music teachers whose goals are to support music education in Texas, provide professional growth opportunities for educators, foster public support for music in schools and offer quality musical experiences for students.

The 13 students that were selected for this honor are:

Katherine Beebe, 9th grade, Cello

Jacqueline Bustos, 12th grade, Cello       

Dylan Garibaldi, 11th grade, Viola

Matthew Hsu, 10th grade, Viola

Zane Laijas, 9th grade, Oboe

Emily Rivera, 10th grade, Violin

Jonathan Villegas, 9th grade, Viola

Barrett Brown, 9th grade, Cello

Juan Carrasco, 11th grade, String Bass

Alexander Hoxie, 12th grade, Viola

Hannah Kim, 9th grade, Violin

Stella Marti, 9th grade, Viola

Emily Seddighzadeh, 11th grade, Violin
