NEISD middle schools participate in IMPACT Summit

Students from Wood Middle School and STEM Academy at Nimitz Middle School showed off their complex conservation projects at the Impact Summit at the Witte Museum on Friday, March 29. The event is sponsored by San Antonio Water System (SAWS) and is meant to empower people to positively influence our environment, society, and economy through water conservation. Teams from across the city were invited to the event, and students were tasked with pitching their ideas.

The team from Wood Middle School was made up of 8th graders like Alyssa Morse. She says the Impact Team decided to write and illustrate a storybook to educate elementary students on the importance of water conservation.

“We wanted to write a children’s storybook about water conservation because the kids are the roots of our community,” said Morse. “They need to know this for the future. In May we have plans to go to Fox Run and Woodstone Elementary to read to them.”

The Nimitz STEM Academy Impact Team took their water conservation project to the red planet. Part of this project included a hydrology unit that had students preparing for their own mission to Mars. They made displays that included models showing the challenges of establishing a colony and preserving water on Mars.
