Future educators and their mentors received a warm welcome at this year’s Student Teacher Reception on Tuesday, March 26. This event is held twice a year in an effort to formally thank and recognize District cooperating teachers for their participation in working with a student who is joining the field of education. For North East ISD principals, it’s an opportunity to meet prospective candidates that will support the District’s Tradition of Excellence.
Aspiring teachers like Juan Martinez says taking part in this program has put him one step closer to reaching his goal.
“My experience so far has been intense and has allowed me to push myself to achieve my dreams,” said Martinez. “It has certainly been a wild ride, but I am loving it.”
Martinez is participating in the Texas Tech 2+1 Undergraduate Program and is currently shadowing at Walzem Elementary School. He's just one of many student teachers, practicum students, and interns from a variety of universities and alternative programs. In fact, there were 25 educator preparation programs represented at the reception.
A total of 168 student teachers and interns, some with dual placements, and 188 Cooperating Teachers were placed in 50 NEISD schools this spring. Of the 50 participating campuses there are 31 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, and seven high schools.
Student teachers enjoyed the opportunity to get on the microphone and thank their cooperative teacher and principal. Following the thank you message, student teachers received a gift bag from Human Resources personnel.
NEISD also arranged placements for field experience, practicum students and interns. Since Jan. 7, they have placed an additional 226 students in District schools to help meet their educational requirements. This semester NEISD has more than 394 students in the District working toward their certification/license. In all, NEISD has hosted and mentored 896 students working towards their teaching certification this year.
