NEISD students place at Japanese Speech Contest

North East ISD had a strong showing at the 30th annual Regional Japanese Speech Contest. Students from Johnson and Churchill High Schools placed during the competition at San Antonio College Saturday, Feb. 16.

NEISD Japanese language students won first, second and third place in Division 1 poetry recitation and Division 2 Haiku recitation. They also finished in 1st place in Division 3 free speech, which consists of a three-minute memorized speech. Of the 12 Japanese language students who competed, seven placed at the contest.

Division 1 Poetry Recitation

1st place: Pamela Interino (Johnson, 10th grade)

2nd place: Elianna Moore (Johnson, 9th grade)

3rd Place: Joanna Kim (Johnson, 10th Grade)

Division 2 Haiku Recitation

1st place: Sabrina Uy Tesy (Johnson, 11th grade)

2nd place: Mario Garcia (Churchill, 10th grade)

3rd place: Leeza Mushtaq (Johnson, 10th grade)

Division 3 Free Speech

1st Place: Victoria Wendell (Churchill, 11th grade)

Pamela Interino, Elianna Moore, Sabrina Uy Tesy, Mario Garcia and Victoria Wendell have advanced to the statewide contest at Rice University in Houston Saturday, March 23. These students spent time during lunch, and before and after school, memorizing, writing and practicing for this contest. Congratulations to these NEISD students and their Japanese teacher Kato Sensei.
