Thousand Oaks students enjoy live Dr. Seuss performance

Students at Thousand Oaks Elementary School were treated to a live theatrical performance of some of Dr. Seuss’ most beloved stories on Thursday, Nov. 29. Barbara Simpson is one of seven members who performed through Extended Run Players, a group of seasoned actors affiliated with the theater department at University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). The group specializes in “readers theater” for audiences of all ages.

“I think when you’re read to out loud the story comes alive, and then you begin to realize the value of great literature,” said Simpson. “It also encourages people to read for themselves. As they read they can think interpretively, and try to hear the characters as they’re reading the story.”

Kindergarten, first and second-grade students gathered in the library to listen to a rousing audible performance of “Horton Hears a Who!” while each performer wore a special hat representing the character they were playing.

“The kids have a really good time,” said Simpson. “They pay a lot of attention, partly because we have silly things on our heads that represent our characters. Teachers really enjoy exposing the kids to the ability to hear literature read aloud, which is something that a lot of kids don’t get the opportunity to do.”

The acting troupe hopes to inspire students to read by sharing their love of performing, including the challenge of using their voice and expressions to make the characters come to life. For more information about Extended Run Players contact Barbara Simpson at 210-884-0965.
