North East ISD celebrates heroes on Veterans Day

It is a longstanding tradition at North East ISD to honor veterans and active duty members of the military with a variety of ceremonies and events on Veterans Day. The day is often thought of as a time to remember, but in addition to remembering those who have fought to protect this country, NEISD takes the time to appreciate our veterans.

Veterans Day will be observed on Sunday, Nov. 11 this year. As a result, NEISD campuses held events on Friday, Nov. 9, and Monday, Nov. 12.

Churchill High School honored the memory of Staff Sergeant Clay Bowen, a Churchill graduate who died in the line of duty in Afghanistan in 2009. Bowen’s Gold Star Mother, Reesa Doebbler, presented a flag to principal Justin Oxley.

At Harmony Hills Elementary School, more than 50 veterans and active duty service members attended a patriotic ceremony in the gymnasium. Guests were treated to music and poems from the students while veterans and their families enjoyed a reception in the library.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian G. Gottardy attended the Veterans Day program at Huebner Elementary School Monday, Nov. 12. Dozens of veterans and their families enjoyed a breakfast in the library before being celebrated by students, staff and community members.

From heartfelt speeches and ceremonies to warm breakfast receptions, we hope every single veteran that attended a North East campus left feeling honored, recognized – and most of all – appreciated for their dedication to military service and our country.
