JROTC cadets honor Medal of Honor recipient with memorial match

Cadets from Churchill and LEE high schools combined forces to host the first ever Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez Memorial Marksmanship Match on Oct. 25-27. Master Sergeant Benavidez is a Medal of Honor recipient. The Texas native was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Ronald Reagan after he was severely wounded saving the lives of at least eight other soldiers in Vietnam in 1968.

The match included nearly 180 outstanding junior shooters from 17 high schools and two 4-H clubs from San Antonio, Lubbock, Houston and Corpus Christi. The Roy Benavidez Match is one of five competitive air rifle events North East ISD will host this year, and is sanctioned by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). NEISD will also host a Junior Olympic qualifying match, a sanctioned NRA regional match and a Bexar County Match scheduled for the spring of 2019.

The top individual precision shooter was Anne White, with a score of 584 out of 600. The top precision team was the Johnson Jaguars led by Isabella Rios, who also placed second individually with a score of 582 out of 600. The top sporter shooter was Andrew Larson with an impressive score of 564 out of 600. The top sporter team was Hays High School from Buda, Texas.

JROTC cadets from Churchill elected to donate a portion of the proceeds from the marksmanship event to help support and maintain the Texas Medal of Honor memorial in The Grove at Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge.
