Poet Sarah Kay holds workshops at Ed White

Ed White Middle School welcomed acclaimed poet Sarah Kay on Tuesday, Oct. 23. She is the founder and co-director of Project VOICE, a program based out of New York that uses spoken word poetry to entertain, educate and inspire through student and teacher workshops around the world.

Kay started off her visit with an hour-long performance featuring several of her own poems in front of 200 NEISD students. Next, she held a workshop with students from Ed White, Roosevelt High School and North East School of the Arts (NESA). English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) Instructional Coach Autumn Carter says the workshop showed students how to take the next step with their own work.

“She’s actually showing them how to engage themselves in the writing process and share that with others,” said Carter. “So, she’s teaching them how to play with language and how to manipulate words and look at poetry structures and create visual images. She’s also showing them how to actually perform it. That means looking at the words on paper and creating something people can watch you perform with hand movements, voice inflection, and expressions.”

Kay also held a professional development workshop for Ed White, Roosevelt and NESA teachers where she discussed techniques for engaging and empowering their students. On Wednesday, Oct. 24 and Thursday, Oct. 25, Kay will lead additional student workshops for 6th, 7th and 8th grade Ed White students.
